The Post Partum Depression: Addressing the Challenges Behind the Joy

Motherhood is a beautiful journey that brings lots of happiness, new life, new energy, joy, and what not to thank life even more, to love life even more, and to hug and cherish life even more. A mom smiles for the first time after long hours of unbearable pain when she hears her baby's first cry. A  long nine-month journey comes to an end beautifully.
However, with so much joy and happiness, this journey also comes with lots of challenges that are ignored and overlooked. And one of the challenges is the Postpartum depression.

First Cry: A New Beginning
After nurturing life for nine months, a woman’s world changes with the first cry of her baby. All the cuts, stitches, and pain seem like nothing in front of an innocent face. The mom feels complete and content after holding her baby for the first time. Although the motherhood journey begins even before the baby is born it starts from the day, she sees those two positive lines. The butterflies in her stomach had never felt before. Getting that extra love, care, and attention from her near and dear ones makes her feel special. She is growing and grooming day by day. Yet, behind all the smiles and happiness, a new mom often encounters exhaustion, body pain, anxiety, and countless emotions.
Yet, behind the smiles and celebrations, a new mom often grapples with exhaustion, body pain, and overwhelming emotions.

Unspoken Challenges of Motherhood
The initial days of motherhood are both physically and mentally demanding. Struggles while feeding, sleepless nights, and a number of advice from others add to the pressure. As the attention fully shifts to the baby, the mom may start feeling ignored.
While every other person focuses on the baby’s well-being, the mother’s mental health often goes unnoticed, which sometimes leads to sadness, loneliness, and even depression.

What Is Postpartum Depression?
Postpartum depression also refers as PPD, is a common but neglected condition that affects new mothers. Postpartum depression includes continuous feelings of sadness and irritation, tiredness,  lack of interest in daily activities, difficulty in bonding with the baby, and a feeling of guilt &  insufficiency. If this depression is left untreated it may sometimes lead to severe mental health issues.

Acknowledging the Signs of Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression is not something that can’t be treated. In many cases, this period is dismissed naturally by the passing of time. But there are times when a mother needs to be treated before it's too late. Comments like “you’re exhausted” or “It’s normal and will heal by the time” prevent mothers from seeking help. It is important to identify these signs and take early measures. Some of the signs  to acknowledge Postpartum Depression are:

  1. Feeling Irritated, sadness or loneliness
  2. Feeling disconnected from the baby
  3. Crying frequently without any reason
  4. Difficulty in sleeping

The Importance of Family Support
Family support plays an important role during this crucial period. Whenever you notice changes in the behaviour of any new mom, do not ignore these signs, take her to the specialist.

Supporting New Mothers
To create a positive surrounding for new moms:

  1. Priotize a mom’s health, encourage her to rest, eat healthy meals, and take care of herself as well.
  2. Be patient with new moms and notice their behavioural changes if any.
  3. If you see any changes, encourage the mother to seek professional help. 4. Try to share her responsibilities to give her more attention and time to rest.

Call for Mental Health Awareness
Postpartum depression is a crucial thing to be addressed and discussed openly. Counseling sessions can help mothers handle their feelings & emotions and make them understand how to handle the new role they will play in life.
